On a road trip down below The Bridge to see Mom I was invited by Ryan Forrey, a master potter with The Henry Ford Greenfield Village Pottery, to see their woodfired kiln and studio. What a treat since I worked there as a kid. One thing I learned is it might take me a couple hours to answer a question. Enjoy the tour and stay in there!

This stack of bricks is not a kiln but a traditional Japanese method for burning selected organics into ash for glaze making. After the plant material is slow burned from the bottom up it is collected, washed, and mixed into slip glazes. Some of the bricks had a lot of pitch on them from burning the Balsam trimmings left over from making Christmas wreaths so I built a special fire to remove it.

Rick and Willy got me motivated to remove the clay foundation and create a new for the floor. We came upon an ingenious way to indicate the East/West axis. I like how the nature of imperminance is expressed in the constantly changing details.

Realizing Floor Not Level Realizing Floor Not Level

After removing the test wall it was obvious the floor had slumped downhill some and a decision had to be made to rebuild the floor after leveling by pulling gravel up from below. The pitch was 4" in 15' and leveling the shelves could become a problem.

Have you ever wondered why "record" stores look the way they do? Well here is the lady who helped start it all in the first music capital of the world, Detroit, Michigan, U.S. of A.,... in 1940. She had no idea what she gave up for the love of her man, but then I would not have been conceived in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

OK, there should/can be music added but this is a first attempt at using the simple parts of my editing features. These shots take us through some of my 3D thinking in brick and how it changes along the way, refining itself like reworked clay. Doing clay can have a lot of re-thinking before the final decision to fire comes and building the kiln is no exception.

I've been asked for something on the kiln design I'm building. I'd like to have all the flat work done by September and start raising the chamber wall before the Christmass greens gathering and wreath season begins but probably will be working in the on nice days throughout the winter.

Gathering Christmas Wreath Greens Gathering Christmas Wreath Greens

Once the wind dies down (it get's real loud) this is how we start making greens for Christmas decorations. I snip enough for my wreath orders and some for a local greenhouse. Along with the greens I save the stick and in some cases a good size limb for stoking in the woodfired pottery kiln.
